Event: Polar Bear Club New Year's Day Swim

Date: Friday, January 1, noon
Location: North Avenue Beach, 1600 N. Lake Shore

Cost: Free

Why to go: Here's a sure-fire way to shock that hangover outta you: take a dip in freezing-cold Lake Michigan on New Year's Day. That's exactly what the Chicago Polar Bear Club (an informal group) plans to do, and you're invited. Just meet at the boathouse at noon, strip down to a swimsuit, and go on in with everybody else. If this is how your 2010 starts, it can only get better from here, right?

Check out our top five weekend picks.

Stay In The Know With The Chicago Experts September 9, 2009

Greetings from Chicago.com!
September is my favorite month (and not only because it’s my birthday). I love September because I don’t need my winter coat yet. I love September because it reminds me of those back-to-school days and back-to-school clothes. I love September because the leaves change and it’s simply beautiful outside. I love September because there are several ways to have a good time (watching football, for example) as well as several ways to do good (such as raising money for cures). However you spend your September, Chicago.com is here to help.

Walk It
Join fellow walkers as they help battle Lou Gehrig’s disease at Chicago’s 8th annual Les Turner ALS Walk4Life on September 12. This community event will raise money, awareness, and hope to one day find a cure. Check in is at 8:30am at the Montrose Harbor (4400 N. Lake Shore Drive). Shelly, we’ll be walking for you!

Drink It
Stroll through Old Town and you’ll find the best the city has to offer: comedy clubs, great Mexican food, and cute boutiques. Wells Street is hosting “Crush, Music & Comedy Fest,” on Saturday September 12-Sunday, September 13. Hours are from 12:00am-11pm both days. You’ll be able to sample over 100 wines. It’s like traveling to France, Italy, Australia, Spain, and Chile all in one day!

Fight It
Continue walking for a good cause on Sunday, September 20 for the Multiple Myeloma/Ann Landers Race for Research that educates and fights this rare blood cancer. Check in is at 9:00am at 2300 N. Cannon in Lincoln Park.

Hear It
Whether you want to see Alice in Chains at the House of Blues or Toby Keith at the First Midwest Bank Amphitheatre, Chicago promises a night of great live music. Prefer musicals? Head to the Briar Street Theater and see Blue Man Group. Like Dancing? Check out Bill T. Jones and Arnie Zane Dance Company at Ravinia.

Crack It
There are many ways to celebrate autumn. You can go on a crisp walk or watch the leaves change. My husband and I prefer to grab a few pints of Guinness (him) and share some fresh seafood (me). Luckily at the Oyster Fest, located in Roscoe Village on September 19, there will be many tents with fresh oysters. Neighborhood restaurants, however, will also feature other culinary goodies besides fish.

Buy It
With interests rates so low and so many homes on the market, now is a great time to look for your dream casa. Check out the latest abodes on Dream Town. Whether you are buying or selling, this website will help you search the MLS. And then you can concentrate on the fun stuff-like what colors to paint your place or which flatscreen to buy!

Eat It
Yolk just opened their second location in River North, and you’d better run there for breakfast. You can also try their South Loop location. From skillets to scramblers, you indulge in a low-carb egg fantasy. Of course, there’s also stuffed French toast just in case you aren’t quite feeling like ordering egg whites.

Pink It
Think pink and help kick off Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October at the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on Saturday, September 26 in Grant Park. This year they added a 10K run, but you can still do the 5K walk/run if that is more your speed.

Celtic Fest Chicago
Grab a harp, an Irish bagpipe and a kilt. Then, head to the 2009 Celtic Fest Chicago. This festival will take place September 12 & 13 in Chicago's Grant Park. Enjoy the Celtic music and dancing. By the end, you’ll feel like you’ve traveled to 7 places: Ireland; Scotland; Isle of Man; Cornwall; Wales; Galicia, Spain; and Brittany, France. There’s even a sheepherding demo that the kiddies will love. Find Out More »

Tip of The Month
North Avenue, Oak Street and Foster Avenue Beach are closed after Labor Day, so find a friend with a pool or blow up a plastic one! You can always hit the spa for a relaxing day in a hot tub or sauna.
