Event: Polar Bear Club New Year's Day Swim

Date: Friday, January 1, noon
Location: North Avenue Beach, 1600 N. Lake Shore

Cost: Free

Why to go: Here's a sure-fire way to shock that hangover outta you: take a dip in freezing-cold Lake Michigan on New Year's Day. That's exactly what the Chicago Polar Bear Club (an informal group) plans to do, and you're invited. Just meet at the boathouse at noon, strip down to a swimsuit, and go on in with everybody else. If this is how your 2010 starts, it can only get better from here, right?

Check out our top five weekend picks.

The Chicago Cultural Center

The Chicago Traveler
Chicago Cultural Center
Posted by on March 24th 2008 to Architecture & Attractions, Art, Collectibles and Hobbies, Museums Tagged architecture, Architecture & Attractions, art, Art, Collectibles and Hobbies, blue-line, brown-line, chicago, downtown, free, grant-park, green-line, loop, magnificent-mile, michigan-avenue, millennium-park, Museums, orange-line, pink-line, purple-line, red-line, wheelchair access

Completed in 1897, the Chicago Cultural Center was the first permanent home of the Chicago Public Library and now serves as an arts and culture center.

Constructed at a cost of nearly $2 million, the building is a beautiful example of Chicago’s turn-of-the-century architecture. The north wing (Randolph St entrance) features Doric columns, mahogany doors, and green marble walls. The rotunda here features a yellow-toned, stained-glass dome in intricate Renaissance pattern. The south wing (Washington St entrance) is designed with Romanesque revival elements: arched doors and white marble walls. The majestic staircase is also made of marble, set with elaborate mosaics of glass, stone, and mother-of-pearl. The 38-foot (12 m) dome here is claimed to be the world’s largest Tiffany stained-glass dome and is valued at an estimated $35 million.

In 1991, the Library was relocated to the new Harold Washington Library Center. The Chicago Cultural Center is now the home of the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and is one of the city’s Visitor Information Centers. It is one of the city’s most popular attractions and features more than 1,000 programs and exhibitions of performing, visual, and literary arts.

Stay In The Know With The Chicago Experts September 9, 2009

Greetings from Chicago.com!
September is my favorite month (and not only because it’s my birthday). I love September because I don’t need my winter coat yet. I love September because it reminds me of those back-to-school days and back-to-school clothes. I love September because the leaves change and it’s simply beautiful outside. I love September because there are several ways to have a good time (watching football, for example) as well as several ways to do good (such as raising money for cures). However you spend your September, Chicago.com is here to help.

Walk It
Join fellow walkers as they help battle Lou Gehrig’s disease at Chicago’s 8th annual Les Turner ALS Walk4Life on September 12. This community event will raise money, awareness, and hope to one day find a cure. Check in is at 8:30am at the Montrose Harbor (4400 N. Lake Shore Drive). Shelly, we’ll be walking for you!

Drink It
Stroll through Old Town and you’ll find the best the city has to offer: comedy clubs, great Mexican food, and cute boutiques. Wells Street is hosting “Crush, Music & Comedy Fest,” on Saturday September 12-Sunday, September 13. Hours are from 12:00am-11pm both days. You’ll be able to sample over 100 wines. It’s like traveling to France, Italy, Australia, Spain, and Chile all in one day!

Fight It
Continue walking for a good cause on Sunday, September 20 for the Multiple Myeloma/Ann Landers Race for Research that educates and fights this rare blood cancer. Check in is at 9:00am at 2300 N. Cannon in Lincoln Park.

Crack It
There are many ways to celebrate autumn. You can go on a crisp walk or watch the leaves change. My husband and I prefer to grab a few pints of Guinness (him) and share some fresh seafood (me). Luckily at the Oyster Fest, located in Roscoe Village on September 19, there will be many tents with fresh oysters. Neighborhood restaurants, however, will also feature other culinary goodies besides fish.

Eat It
Yolk just opened their second location in River North, and you’d better run there for breakfast. You can also try their South Loop location. From skillets to scramblers, you indulge in a low-carb egg fantasy. Of course, there’s also stuffed French toast just in case you aren’t quite feeling like ordering egg whites.

North Avenue, Oak Street and Foster Avenue Beach are closed after Labor Day, so find a friend with a pool or blow up a plastic one! You can always hit the spa for a relaxing day in a hot tub or sauna.

A Great Time in Chicago

What a Great Time In Chicago! Sure the Cubs and White Sox are not in first place but the city is in prime-time. We have had Jazz Feast and the big Oprah Show on the Mag Mile. This a great time to have a steak, to find the crab or lobster of your choice. Go find the best pizza AND HOTDOG OF YOUR CHOICE. Buy A NEW OUTFIT. Walk THE LAKE. Ride YOUR BIKE. Just GET IT ALL IN NOW!

September is a wonder time in Chicago. Jackets and sweaters are so fashionable. Walking Michagan Ave. is so hot. Selecting the right restaurant is a good idea. Sea food is a smart move. However, steak is the real deal. Spend the money and invest in a great steak.

One must be so selective in making the best choices for entertainment. The Reader and Center stage are great sources of info. Always remember September the days we chariest.

A Rainbow

Living on the lake in a high rise is a wonderful experience. Today I saw a beautiful rainbow across Lake Michigan. The colors res, yellow and blue are a striking combinations of hues. I wonder what each color represents.

As summer is near over, I feel a sense of lost. Where did the time go? I didn't ride my bike enough. I worked too hard. I needed more time for fun.

A rainbow is a beautiful act of nature. God sent the rainbow to Noah as a blessing. Living in the lake in a high rise is indeed a blessing. Chicago IS A GREAT CITY, YET THERE ARE SO MANY PEOPLE SUFFERING AROUND TRHWE WORLD. I hope we get the Olympics and the money can help a lot of people around the world. That is my wish for this rainbow.

The Chicago Reader Is a Treasure

The Reader has all of the hot information you need about the city. http://www.chicagoreader.com/chicago/Home

Centerstage is a Great Resource

http://www.centerstagechicago.com/ I love centerstage as a point of reference as to what is happening about town.

High Rise Living Chicago

This Blog is all about lifestyle. There are millions of people who live in high rise complexes. We generally do not have a suburban nor rural way of life.
